Zuleta library is a key part of the Foundation’s commitment to community education, and supports the Foundation’s vision of education, which extends beyond traditional academic subjects to include subjects such as organic agriculture, responsible citizenship, recycling and sustainable living.
Project L.E.E.R (READ)
This project is based on the necessity of taking literature to rural areas and promoting a love of reading, especially for children. Our approach is that reading should be fun and understandable.
How did the idea start?
The library space was born as an initiative of Luz Plaza Pallares. In the year 2000, the Foundation, thanks to her help, managed to raise the infrastructure and implemene the plan for “The Library” with books, furniture, computers and support staff for activities. Over the years since then, many people, volunteers and interns have supported the growth of the project.
What are the objectives of the project?
- To provide information and improve the general culture of the Zuleteños (people of Zuleta)
- To promote literary study, the spread of information and a love of reading
- To develop a space which promotes the culture, language and heritage of the community
- To train teaching staff in new educational strategies
What is in progress…
The Library is a space that promotes alternative education and workshops for community children, including yearly courses and summer school activities in areas such as English, Quechua, mathematics, art, handicrafts, reading, dance, theatre, puppets, sustainable living, cooking and more.
In addition, Zuleta Library supports daily help with school work and offers computer access and internet service.
“The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look
for the circumstances they want, and if they can’t find them, make them.” (Bernard Shaw)
The library is a resource for the whole community of Zuleta, not just the children, and is an educational space and learning hub for young and old alike. The Foundation seeks to provide workshops and classes in accordance with requests from the people of Zuleta.
